natural observation but of revelation. For Luke, as we have seen, it is only when their eyes are ‘opened’ and Jesus is ‘made known to them’ that the disciples grasp who he is. For John, Jesus does not only appear to the disciples but is ‘manifested’ or ‘revealed’ (ephanerōthē—again passive) to the disciples (21:14).
